Blogging

So a recent post over on Johns Adventures got me thinking, especially after the “upgrade” of Drupal I did at the weekend didn’t go as smoothly as planned (mainly due to user error, but that’s not the point).I’ve used Drupal on this site since I moved from movable type when they changed all of the terms of license a while back, prior to MT I used blogger.com which means that there are a few issues with me just changing my mind about which blogging platform I use, mainly related to the fact that there are post and comments back to March 2000, mostly all rubbish of course, but it’s my rubbish so that makes it special to me.

Now I’ve lived with Drupal for 3 years (and 4 days) and in that time I’ve added a few modules, used Gallery (and removed it recently for flickr) and in rebuilding my site over the weekend something happened. Ok so I broke it, and having played with Drupal for as long as I have it took 10 minutes to get it all back and running, but then in 1 minute I downloaded WordPress on John’s recommendation (although I had looked at it before when I decided I wanted the “power” of Drupal and all the bits you can extend yourself rather than a blog engine of WordPress) and it seems obvious I should switch, this dull site is a blog, nothing more, it is a place where I can post dull content that is occasionally useful to me, my family can look at cute pictures of Iona (and less cute ones of me) and that’s it.

So I don’t need a framework that some day in the future would allow me to develop my modules and plugins, the chances are my “amazing” idea for a module will have been written, probably in a half-arsed way by someone else, and really *if* I ever had the time to do something like that, I’m sure I could easily find more interesting things to do.

So now I have a copy of my Drupal DB locally, I have a copy of WordPress running locally (1 minute install – nice) and now maybe I need to spend some time on Google looking for information and hints on how to migrate.
