May 2008
So May at least saw me get out of the front door, which is more than could be said for April — a month that, if my activity log is anything to go by, I spent entirely on the sofa. One ride, a Morning Ride of 34.8 kilometres in 73 minutes, was the sum total of my efforts, but I'll take it. Encouragingly, it was apparently good enough to bag 29 personal bests, which either says something positive about my fitness on the day or something fairly telling about how little I've ridden before. Probably the latter, if I'm honest.
Compared to April, when I recorded precisely nothing, May represents a 100% improvement, and I'm choosing to frame it that way. The days are longer now, the mornings fractionally less grim, and it seems that was all the excuse I needed to finally drag the bike out. So the question going into the summer is whether one decent ride becomes two, and two becomes something resembling an actual training block — or whether June quietly goes the same way as April. History, it's fair to say, is not entirely on my side here.
