January 2009
So January 2009, then. Not exactly a blockbuster month by any stretch — one single Morning Run, 7km in 39 minutes, which works out to a pace of about 5:35 per kilometre. On the plus side, that run apparently netted me 11 achievements and 3 personal records, which either says something encouraging about my fitness or, more likely, something fairly telling about how little I'd been doing beforehand. Still, 31 metres of elevation and 39 minutes of actually moving counts for something, even if I'm not entirely sure what.
The context, of course, is that December produced a grand total of nothing — zero activities, zero minutes, a perfect blank. So compared to that, one chilly January morning run is practically an ultramarathon. It's the kind of improvement that looks impressive in percentage terms and slightly embarrassing in every other sense. January in the UK being what it is — dark, cold, and generally hostile to any ambition formed in the warmth of indoors — I'll take it. The PRs suggest the bar had been set reassuringly low, which at least gives me somewhere to go from here. So, onwards.
