So, 2010 then. Twenty-five runs, just under twenty hours of moving, and 181 kilometres covered at an average pace of six minutes thirty-six per kilometre — which, if I'm being generous to myself, I'd describe as "steady," and if I'm being honest, is probably just slow. That said, nine personal records managed to sneak their way in amongst the mediocrity, which I'll take. The standout was the Morning Run, and whilst I won't pretend the year was a masterclass in structured training, the fact that I laced up at all on some of those mornings deserves at least a small amount of credit.

The comparison with 2009 is, admittedly, not a flattering one. Last year I managed fifty-four runs covering over four hundred and twenty-nine kilometres, with an average pace a good forty seconds per kilometre faster and a heart rate that suggested I was actually working rather than just going through the motions — I also threw in a couple of bike rides, presumably to keep things interesting. So by almost every measurable metric, 2010 was a step backwards (and a slower one at that). Still, the nine PRs tell me there's something worth building on, and the sensible thing — the thing I'll almost certainly say I'm going to do and then negotiate with myself about come February — is to actually run more consistently and worry less about the individual sessions.
