February 2012
Compared with January 2012
February, then. One run. A single, solitary morning run of 10.8km in 72 minutes, which at a pace of 6:40 per kilometre tells you pretty much everything you need to know about where my head — and legs — were at. To be fair, 234 metres of elevation suggests I at least picked a route with some hills in it, which either shows commendable ambition or a fairly poor memory of what I'd signed up for. There was a personal best in there somewhere, which I'll take, though I'm aware that setting a PR when you've only done one activity all month is the kind of achievement that probably shouldn't be framed and hung on the wall.
So, compared to January, this is quite the step back. January had nine activities across running and cycling — 53 kilometres of running alone, plus 61km on the bike, nearly eleven hours of movement in total. February managed 72 minutes. It's February in England, which goes some way to explaining things: it's dark, it's wet, and the mornings have a particular quality that makes a warm duvet feel like an entirely reasonable training partner. The honest truth is the momentum didn't carry, and one month of solid work doesn't yet make a habit. Something to remember going into March, really — though I suspect I'll need reminding.
