July 2012
Compared with June 2012
So July was, by anyone's measure, a fairly quiet month on the fitness front. Five runs totalling just under 25km and about two and a half hours of actual moving — not exactly the stuff of legend. The pace was at least a little more respectable than I've been managing lately, averaging 5:48 per kilometre, and I somehow managed to pick up three PRs in the process (two of which were indoor, so I'll take that with the appropriate pinch of salt). A morning run made it into the notable column, which tells you something about the overall competition for highlights that month.
Compared to June, it's a pretty stark drop-off — though June did have the small matter of the Escape from Alcatraz triathlon in it, which rather inflated the numbers across the board with swim, bike and run all getting a look in. So perhaps the more honest framing is that July was the month where I came back down to earth after that, both literally and motivationally. The summer has a funny way of doing that — long evenings that somehow don't translate into actual training, and a general sense that there's always tomorrow. Going forward, the intention is clearly to build the running base back up before the lack of base becomes the theme of whatever race I sign up for next, having learned absolutely nothing from previous experience.
