2014
Compared with 2013
2014 turned out to be a really solid year for me — 111 activities and just over 2,856 minutes of moving, which feels like a decent chunk of my life well spent. The big story was the bike: I clocked 79 rides covering 423 km and climbing 1,509 metres, picking up 96 personal records along the way, whether that was a quick morning spin before work or a longer evening ride when the weather played ball. Running took a back seat in terms of distance, but I still managed 32 runs across 195 km, including two races — the Men's Health run and a Kids Run that was genuinely one of my favourite days of the year. Thirteen running PRs and 25 achievements on the run alone tells me the quality was there even if the volume dipped, and I'll take that.
Comparing 2014 to 2013 is pretty eye-opening, though. Last year I ran 37 times for 247 km at a 6:32 average pace, including the Marlow Half Marathon, so my running volume and speed have both fallen — something I want to address in 2015. On the flip side, I barely touched the bike in 2013 with just 12 rides, so going to 79 this year shows a real shift in how I'm mixing things up, and the extra 588 minutes of total activity time compared to 2013 proves the overall commitment is trending in the right direction. I also notice the swim completely dropped off after a single open-water session in 2013, so getting back in the water — alongside some HiiT to keep things sharp — feels like the obvious thing to build into next year's plan.
