August 2014
Compared with July 2014
August was, by my standards at least, a fairly productive month. Twenty-two activities logged across cycling and running, which adds up to just under eight hours of actual movement — not bad for someone who spent a decent chunk of the summer convincing himself that the weather was too nice to train in. The cycling did most of the heavy lifting: sixteen rides covering 65 kilometres, picking up twelve PRs along the way, a good number of which I'll quietly attribute to the Boris Bikes rather than any sudden improvement in fitness. The six runs totalled just over 31 kilometres at an average pace of 7:28 per kilometre, which is the kind of number that tells you I was out there, at least, even if I wasn't exactly troubling any records.
Compared to July, the step up is fairly obvious — five activities and 240 minutes became twenty-two activities and 458 minutes, which sounds impressive until you remember that July was, frankly, embarrassing. The Boris Bike commutes account for a lot of the volume jump, and I won't pretend otherwise, but getting the kilometres in is getting the kilometres in regardless of how silly the bike looks. The running is building steadily too, going from a couple of outings totalling 8.6 kilometres to something approaching a proper monthly total. So the direction of travel is good, even if the pace of travel — as those run splits confirm — is perhaps not something to shout about just yet.
