January 2016
Compared with December 2015
So January managed to be both busy and underwhelming at the same time, which I think is something of a personal speciality. Nineteen activities logged across the month, with 246 minutes of actual moving — the vast majority of that on the bike, 18 rides covering 69 kilometres and 423 metres of climbing, which for January in England is either impressive or a sign of mild delusion depending on how you look at it. The one run I did manage — a solitary Afternoon Run — covered 10.2 kilometres at a pace I was quietly pleased with, though one run in a month is less a training plan and more a coincidence. Still, the legs seemed to remember what they were doing, which is more than I expected.
So compared to December, things are actually moving in the right direction, which makes a pleasant change. The riding in particular has come on noticeably — up from 38.5 kilometres to 69, and over three times the elevation, swapping the flat Boris Bike commutes around London for something with a bit more substance to it. The running pace tells its own story too; December's Morning Run was a rather honest 7:02 per kilometre, whereas January's effort was down to 3:20, though I suspect the distances involved explain some of that gap (and I'm choosing not to look too hard at the maths). Going forward, the challenge will be keeping this momentum through February, which historically is where good intentions go to quietly die.
