July 2018
Compared with June 2018
July turned out to be a reasonably busy month by my standards, with 24 activities and just over seven hours of moving around in various directions. The bulk of that was on the bike — 18 rides covering 84 kilometres and nudging 450 metres of climbing, most of them in and around Horsham, which is at least familiar territory even if it's not exactly the Alps. I managed five runs as well, including a Parkrun and a treadmill session (because apparently I needed to experience summer from the inside of a gym), totalling just under 23 kilometres at a pace that generously rounds up to "comfortable." There was also a swim, which at four minutes and 200 metres I can only describe as more of a vigorous paddle than a training block.
So compared to June, things did pick up — 24 activities versus 14, and 430 minutes against 278, which on paper looks like I suddenly found motivation from somewhere. In fairness, longer evenings and the rare appearance of actual British summer probably helped get me out on the bike more consistently, almost doubling the rides from June's 10 to 18. The running pace was near enough identical month on month, which tells its own story about not exactly pushing the envelope there. Going into August, the cycling base at least feels like it's building into something, though I'm aware I've thought that before and then September has arrived with a bump.
