2021
Compared with 2020
Looking back at 2021, it's been a solid year of staying active across the board — 435 activities and just over 18,750 minutes of moving my body, which I'm genuinely proud of. Running was the backbone of it all, with 121 runs covering nearly 970 km at an average pace of 5:21 per km, and I picked up 147 PRs along the way, which never gets old. Cycling had a great year too — 30 rides, 603 km, and over 6,500 metres of elevation climbed, including some brilliant structured sessions through the Build Me Up programme that really pushed me. Throw in 55 HIIT and cardio workouts, 12 weight training sessions, and even a rare dip in the pool, and it's fair to say 2021 kept me well and truly busy.
Comparing it to 2020, the picture is interesting — last year I logged 551 activities and nearly 24,600 minutes, so the overall volume was higher, but I think 2021 was smarter rather than simply more. My running pace improved slightly from 5:24 to 5:21 per km, and my cycling distance more than doubled from 280 km to 603 km, which shows real progress in two of the sports I care most about. The drop in swimming (from 22 sessions down to just 3) is the one area I want to address — I know how much it complements my running and cycling, so getting back in the water regularly is top of the list for 2022. Overall though, the direction of travel feels positive, and I'm heading into the new year motivated and ready to build on what's working.
