January felt like a bit of a reboot, if I'm honest. Thirty-five activities across the month, which sounds impressive until you realise that 30 of them were walks — though at 168 kilometres and over 1,700 minutes on my feet, I'm not going to apologise for that. The running crept back in too, five sessions totalling 21 kilometres at a modest 5:42 per kilometre, which is about where I'd expect to be after a winter of not really trying very hard. I did manage three personal records, which either means I'm improving or that my previous efforts were even worse than I remembered (probably the latter).

So compared to December, which was a rather quiet 10 activities and just over 51 kilometres of walking, January represents a fairly dramatic step up — more than three times the volume, which is either encouraging or a sign that I had too much time on my hands in the new year. The shift is mostly walking rather than any heroic return to running, but you have to start somewhere, and at least getting outside in a British January counts for something when it's dark by four and the pavements are doing their best to end your ambitions early. The running mileage is low enough that there's clearly work to do, but the legs are moving again and the average heart rate suggests I'm not completely falling apart, so I'll take that as a reasonable foundation for whatever comes next.
