May turned out to be a reasonably busy month by my recent standards, with 21 activities clocking up just under 20 hours of moving about in one way or another. The split was nine runs and twelve walks, which sounds more disciplined than it felt — a fair chunk of those runs were done indoors (five of them, since apparently I still haven't fully committed to the great British spring). The outdoor running did produce one activity logged rather honestly as "More tourist than runner," which I think is the most accurate description of my relationship with pacing I've ever accidentally written. Still, 59 kilometres of running across the month at an average of 5:48 per kilometre is something, even if my heart rate averaging 162 bpm suggests I was working considerably harder than I was making it look.

Compared to April, this was a genuine step up — more than double the activities and over twice the time on my feet, which feels meaningful even accounting for the fact that April was, by any measure, fairly dismal. The walks have clearly been doing some heavy lifting here, with 76.8 kilometres and nearly 14 hours of walking in May versus 51 kilometres the previous month, and with the days finally getting longer and drier (mostly), it's a lot easier to talk yourself into a lunch walk when it isn't horizontal rain outside. So the direction of travel is good, which is the kind of sentence I'm aware I've said before. The question, as ever, is whether June will build on this or whether something will conspire to derail it entirely.
