January 2023
Compared with December 2022
So January, then. Sixty activities and just over 2,000 minutes of moving about the place — which, on paper at least, sounds like I know what I'm doing. The bulk of that was walking, 24 sessions covering 126.7 km, which is either a sign of an active lifestyle or a stubborn refusal to sit still (probably both). Running made up the more structured end of things — 11 runs, 55.3 km, averaging 5:44 per kilometre — and whilst almost all of it was on the treadmill rather than out in the January drizzle, I did manage a PR somewhere in there, so I'll take that. I also threw in six HIIT sessions, ten rows, eight workouts, and one swim that lasted all of nine minutes and 400 metres, which I'm choosing to count anyway.
So compared to December, the step up was fairly significant — 60 activities versus 37, and around 320 more minutes of effort, which is the sort of improvement that makes you feel briefly virtuous. Running more than doubled in both distance and time, the rowing picked up, and the HIIT sessions finally reappeared after being conspicuously absent the month before. December, if I'm honest, had the look of someone winding down for Christmas and not really winding back up again — which is fair enough, but it does mean January was doing a lot of the heavy lifting. Whether I can keep this up into February, when the mornings are still dark and the motivation tends to quietly evaporate, remains to be seen.
