August 2023
Compared with July 2023
August turned out to be a reasonably solid month, all things considered. Thirty activities and just over 1,460 minutes of moving about the place, which sounds impressive until you realise a huge chunk of that — sixteen walks totalling nearly 99 kilometres — was essentially just me putting one foot in front of the other in the sunshine. The running was decent enough though: nine runs, just over 51 kilometres at an average of 5:30 per kilometre, and I managed to sneak in a Night Run which felt far more dramatic than it probably was. I also did five HIIT sessions, including one memorably titled Night HIIT, which I can only assume I agreed to in a moment of misplaced ambition.
So compared to July, it's actually a modest step forward — two more activities, and about 75 more minutes of total effort, which at my current rate of improvement means I'll be competing at an elite level sometime around 2031. The running kilometres crept up slightly (51.2 versus 49.1), though I notice July had five achievements and four PRs against August's solitary one, which suggests July's running had a bit more fire in it — possibly because there's something about a warm August evening that makes a gentle walk feel like an entirely reasonable alternative to actually trying. The elevation on my walks dropped too, so I was clearly seeking out the flatter routes (no comment). Still, the consistency is there, and that's probably what matters most heading into autumn, when the dark mornings will no doubt test my commitment all over again.
