2024
Compared with 2023
So, 2024 is done and dusted, and looking back at the numbers it's actually been a reasonably solid year — which, given how some of it felt at the time, is something of a pleasant surprise. In total I logged 516 activities across the year, which adds up to just over 22,000 minutes of moving about (or roughly 368 hours of my life I could have spent sitting on the sofa, but here we are). Running was the backbone of it all — 111 runs, 538 kilometres, at an average pace of 5:37 per kilometre, which is fine without exactly setting the world alight — and walking quietly did the heavy lifting in the background with 278 outings and nearly 1,550 kilometres covered, which I find slightly staggering if I think about it too long. I also managed to drag myself onto the rowing machine 23 times and did 98 HIIT sessions, which feels like the kind of stat that sounds impressive until you remember most of them were probably 20-minute affairs before work while still half asleep.
Compared to 2023, the direction of travel is genuinely upward, which I'll take. Activities are up from 424 to 516, total active minutes jumped from just over 17,000 to more than 22,000, and the walking in particular has grown considerably — 48 more outings and an extra 330 kilometres on the legs. The running distance is almost identical year on year (535 kilometres in 2023 versus 538 this time), though I picked up fewer PRs and achievements in 2024, which suggests I'm covering similar ground without quite the same sharp edges — something to think about going into 2025. The HIIT sessions increased nicely from 67 to 98, which probably explains why I'm not falling apart quite as badly on the harder runs. So the aim for next year is straightforward really: keep the consistency, find a bit more pace, and try not to use the dark mornings as an excuse quite so readily.
