June 2024
Compared with May 2024
June turned out to be a fairly decent month, all things considered. 59 activities and just under 48 hours of moving about the place, which even I have to admit sounds more impressive than it felt at the time. The running ticked along nicely — 12 runs, just over 61km, and a pace averaging 5:40 per kilometre, which is respectable for someone who spent a fair chunk of the month convincing himself that a Lunch Walk counted as cross-training. Speaking of which, the walking absolutely dominated June: 37 outings, 217km, and nearly 2,000 metres of elevation, which is the kind of number that makes you realise how much ground you cover when the evenings are light and you've got no excuse to go straight home.
So compared to May, the improvement is pretty hard to ignore — 40 activities and 1,556 minutes then versus 59 and 2,868 now, with the running distance more than doubling from 29.9km to 61.7km. The honest answer for why is probably just the weather; longer days and the absence of reasons to stay indoors have a remarkable effect on motivation (funny that). The HIIT sessions crept up too, from 6 to 10, so there's at least some evidence of a training build gathering pace rather than just opportunistic strolling in the sunshine. The question now is whether I can hold this going into July or whether one grey fortnight will undo all of it — and if previous years are anything to go by, I'd say the smart money is on the latter.
