September, then. Forty-six activities and just over 40 hours of moving about the place, which on paper sounds impressively committed and in practice means I spent a lot of early mornings either on a treadmill or trudging round the local streets before the world had properly woken up. The split was pretty much what you'd expect from me right now — a dozen runs covering 62.5km at an average pace of 5:36 per kilometre, eleven HIIT sessions to kid myself I'm doing something explosive, and no fewer than twenty-three walks (the lunch walk very much earning its keep as the highlight of several working days). The running was almost entirely indoors still, which I'm slightly embarrassed about given it's only September, but the treadmill doesn't judge and neither, mercifully, does this blog.

So compared to August, the numbers are pretty similar on the surface — 46 activities versus 49, and the walking distance almost identical at 154km — but the running tells a slightly more interesting story. I knocked 30 seconds per kilometre off my average pace, going from 6:06 down to 5:36, while covering broadly the same territory in less time, which I'm choosing to interpret as fitness rather than just running shorter routes and hoping nobody notices. The HIIT is ticking over nicely too, with a few more minutes banked than last month. As autumn properly sets in and the mornings get darker and considerably less inviting, the question is whether I can hold this momentum or whether October becomes the month I rediscover the sofa. History suggests I should not be too confident.
