October was, by my own standards, a reasonably industrious month — 56 activities and just under 47 hours of moving about, which sounds impressive until you realise that 29 of those activities were walks. Still, I'll take it. The running ticked along nicely with 15 sessions covering 82.4 km at an average pace of 5:40 per kilometre, the bulk of them being Morning Runs, mostly indoors on the treadmill (12 of the 15, since the mornings are now doing that thing where they're dark and cold and frankly uninviting). I squeezed in 12 HIIT sessions too — the usual Morning HIIT format — which at an average heart rate of 122 bpm suggests I was working hard enough to feel virtuous but not quite hard enough to feel destroyed, which is probably the right balance for a Tuesday morning in October.

So, compared to September, the numbers are up pretty much across the board — more activities, more kilometres, more time, more elevation on the walks (1,645 metres versus 1,423 the month before). The running volume jumped from 62.5 km to 82.4 km, which is either encouraging progress or a sign that the darker evenings are pushing me onto the treadmill more than I'd care to admit. Pace has softened slightly from 5:36 to 5:40 per kilometre, which autumn will happily take the blame for even if it isn't entirely responsible. Going into November, the question is whether I can keep this momentum going or whether the combination of cold mornings and a warm duvet will quietly undo all of it — experience suggests I should not be too confident on that front.
