iPhone

Had my first interaction with an iPhone today, only 5 - 10 minutes of play time on a hacked device which the user had filled with "guff" however now I've got to say...

"What is the fuss about?"

Until that moment where I'd had a quick play, the moment where I'd seen and played with the physical device rather than looking at geek p0rn and read the (always) rave reviews I thought I'd want one, I thought that picking up the device and using it would confirm that those that have were right and those that don't have (and invariably it seems criticise) were wrong.

It's a clever thing don't get me wrong, but in brief use it didn't feel right, it didn't feel / work like the device I'd want to use as my phone / organiser / iPod, which was a suprise, I thought almost assumed that it would be fantastic and feel great in the hand and I wouldn't regret getting hold of one.

Still at least I know.

What it needs
- 3G (of course)
- To feel more tactile, on my ipaq it had rubber side grips which when they fell off I changed for some textured metal, both felt great and made me less wary of dropping it
- To be made open and able to be purchased SIM free.
- Greater capacity
- Changeable batteries

On the plus side as Mike pointed out in his comment the screen is good and the interface was very easy to use, with seamless syncing with OSX it will be good, but at this time not for me.

I'm not chucking down my hard earned cash for one, however if I'm given one free I'll certainly see how they work in anger, meanwhile I'll be keeping my Blackberry Pearl (and be happy with it.)

screen/interface

The thing I was impressed with was the quality of the display, in terms of brightness, contrast and and sheer size. It's the first mobile device where surfing the internet was actually useful for more than basic lookup functionality (phone numbers etc). I like the touch interface, but I agree that 3G is going to prove to be a must (nothing worse than getting used to having something, and then getting shafted for coverage).

If you happen to get a second free one, feel free to chuck it my way - like you i'm not willing to pay it for it as it stands with my main issue (that you didn't cover) being capacity - although I should probably just get a bit more organised about my music collection ;-)

tactile? meh - seemed alright to me; it's not dropping things that are my problem, more leaving them on planes and trains ...

Playing

My playing with the device didn't really go into that much detail and as it wasn't mine to load with tunes / pics then I didn't come across the capacity issue, that is however something else that will go on my list of things to be changed....

And the more I think about it there are a few more I'll add....
